This I Have ... Read

The second entry for the word "tolerance" at dictionary.com states,
"a fair, objective, and permissive attitude toward opinions and practices that differ from one's own".
This, to me, suggests a passive approach to tolerance. It is an attitude. An attitude is internal, although often the attitude may rise to the surface and be outwardly expressed. But that is not necessary.
The third entry is preferable, as it expresses a more active approach to tolerance. Dictionary.com states,
"
interest in and concern for ideas, opinions, practices, etc., foreign to one's own".
The word concern, for me, steps beyond attitude. But the word "tolerance" sings out for something more than just concern. As Nicholas D. Kristof writes (The New York Times, September 4, 2010),
"Americans have called on moderates in Muslim countries to speak out against extremists, to stand up for the tolerance they say they believe in. We should all have the guts [to] do the same at home."

For no particular reason, other than I miss Dad, I post this as a tribute to Dad. The song is by Dan Hill. Dan Hill evokes distinct memories of my high school buddies - Doug Newton, one of those buddies, talked of growing up near where Dan Hill grew up, in Don Mills, Ontario. To Dan...for those memories...To Dad...for the wealth that your soul brought to my life. Please listen...Dan Hill: "I Am My Father's Son"

... Seen

Watched an intriguing movie entitled An American Affair. A story that is centered on the event of November 22, 1963. I do remember that day. Living in Edmonton, Alberta. Home at lunch. Tomato soup. Sandwich of unknown contents. We had a small television in our kitchen...is this correct. Of course, in those days you could have a television anywhere: all it took was a set of rabbit ears. Did not need the DirectTV guy telling you that you need a phone line and that he needs to run cables to a TiVo...Anyway...the news of that day was impactual on me...a young lad of six years of age.

... Heard

She smiles in a big way
The way a girl like that smiles
When the world is hers
She held your eyes

Out in the breezeway
Down by the shore
In the lazy summer

And she pulled you in
And she bit your lip
And she made you hers

She looked deep into you
As you lay together
Quiet in the grasp of
Dusk and summer

But you've already lost
But you've already lost
But you've already lost
When you only have
Barely enough to hang on

[Chris Carrabba, 2006]

Remember those walls I built
Well, baby, they're tumbling down
And they didn't even put up a fight
They didn't even make a sound

I found a way to let you in
But, I never really had a doubt
Standing in the light of your halo
I've got my angel now

It's like I've been awakened
Every rule I had you breaking
Is the risk that I'm taking
I ain't ever going to shut you out

Everywhere I am looking now
I'm surrounded by your embrace
Baby, I can see your halo
You know you're my saving grace

You're everything I need and more
It's written all over your face
Baby, I can feel your halo
Pray it won't fade away

[Beyonce Knowles, 2008]
